1 Corinthians 4:10-11

"We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless."

A Message from the Pastor

Some might describe First Presbyterian Church as "something old, something new on historic Penn's Hill," and indeed such a description is apropos; for First Presbyterian has had a meaningful tradition of ministry in Quincy, since its founding in 1884. That tradition has drawn upon the heritage of many who came to this "field" from Scotland; but who in turn were bearers of a tradition associated with John Knox, John Calvin and even Augustine. The "old" of First Presby has much to do, then, with a Gospel tradition which proclaims the love and forgiveness of God in Jesus Christ, the authority of the Scriptures within the church, the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, and the fellowship of believers, who follow the Risen Lord. However, the "new" of First Presby also has much to do with that same love and forgiveness, those same Scriptures, and that same work and fellowship; for the love and forgiveness of God are always new, the Scriptures consistently point to the newness of life in Christ, and the work and fellowship of the Spirit constantly bring life and renewal.

First Presbyterian Church is a gathering of believers, which seeks to be faithful to its wonderful history, all the while being faithful to the one who proclaimed: "Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth: do you not percieve it?" In order to be faithful, as a body of believers, those of First Presbyterian seek to nurture one another according to the character of Jesus Christ; to send one another into the world for the sake of Christ; and to invite one another and yet unknown others into an always new, deeper and fuller relationship with the living Lord.

Whether new or old, may the tradition of First Presbyterian Church continue to be one of service to the Crucified, Risen and Reigning Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Reverend Dr. Stan Johnson
Pastor
